1916 Chevrolet Four-Ninety Touring
Description
The Four-Ninety is a highly significant automobile in Chevrolet history, representing the first salvo of a war with Ford that has continued to the present day. A direct challenger to the Model T, it offered a standard convertible top and windshield, a very modern overhead-valve four-cylinder engine, and a conventional three-speed manual transmission, all notable improvements over the “Tin Lizzie,” at a competitive price of $490.
A previous owner acquired this 1916 Chevrolet Four-Ninety in October 2010 from the estate of Gloria Nouk of Virginia, who is believed to be the third owner. The car remains a fascinating preservation piece, still with its factory-applied paint and upholstery throughout. The top itself is believed to be original and the original plate glass is still in the windshield. Inside, the wooden floorboards are still in place, with linoleum covering the front, as are the original running boards. Dual rear Rocky Mountain-style brakes bring everything safely to a halt. The original engine and drivetrain are also complete. This is undoubtedly among the very best-preserved examples of the Chevrolet Four-Ninety, eligible for the AACA Historic Preservation of Original Features class and would be welcomed in any Bow Tie collection or dealer showroom display.

Ownership History
This 1916 Chevrolet Four-Ninety Touring was purchased by the consignor at Broad Arrow Auctions’ “Passion for the Drive: The Cars of Jim Taylor” in Gloversville, New York in 2022. Mr. Taylor acquired the Chevrolet in October 2010 from the estate of Gloria Nouk of Virginia. While there is no documentation to prove it, Ms. Nouk was reportedly just its third owner, who is thought to have resided in the same neighborhood as the first and second owners. The Chevrolet has remained in the upstate New York area since.
