2005 Mercedes-Benz G500 Exterior
Description
First developed for military use, Mercedes’ body-on-frame SUV has been around for decades, as its rugged appeal attracts wealthy consumers who want something different from your average luxury SUV. The first G-Class (also known as the Geländewagen) was produced in Germany in 1979 as the W460, a body-on-frame, live-axle 4x4. The sport utility remained in production for more than a decade, largely unchanged, before Mercedes-Benz updated it and offered more interior refinement and two sizes in two-, three-, and four-door body styles.
It wasn’t until 2002 that Mercedes-Benz began exporting the G-Class G500 with 5.0-liter V8 to the United States, and among the most impressive G-Class vehicles to cross the Atlantic was the towering G500 4x4 Squared that first appeared in the mid-teens. Looking to replicate the styling of the more expensive 4x4 Squared, a previous owner gave this 2005 G500 model — already considered one of the more reliable G500 iterations — $15,235 worth of exterior upgrades. The SUV’s black body and silver roof, lifted look, fender flares, AMG grille, roof rack, and rear passenger side ladder combine to give it a muscular and dominant look.
If you’re looking for an immaculate interior, combined with the look and feel of a G500 4x4 Squared without the price tag, this may be the ticket.
The 2002-2008 Mercedes-Benz G500 is featured on Hagerty's 2025 Bull Market List, which can be viewed here: 2025 Bull Market List: 11 Hot Rides on the Rise Right Now
