“There is little question that General Motors is devoutly committed to making its plastic Chevy the equal of any car on earth in terms of performance and engineering excellence,” wrote Car and Driver in 1986. “And America's favorite sports car, already superb, is for 1986 even better.”
The fourth-generation C4 Corvette was developed with an emphasis on improved handling and braking, while the sleek exterior was thoroughly overhauled and incorporated several Corvette hallmarks, like pop-up headlights and quad rear taillights. The updated interior included a digital instrument panel advertised as “the most sophisticated instrumentation package ever offered in a production automobile.” New in 1986 was the return of the convertible, along with the familiar coupe with fully removable one-piece roof panel, and the safety of Bosch anti-lock brakes for the first time.
When Chevrolet moved Corvette assembly into its new Bowling Green, Kentucky, plant in 1981, the automaker began offering two-tone paint schemes to highlight its world-class water-based paint system. The 1986 model year would be the penultimate year for the two-tones, including just 1,014 in Silver Beige over Medium Brown, like this low-mile example. With just four owners from new, this 18,500 mile coupe is a beautifully preserved example of America's favorite sports car.
