Robert C. Hupp's career in the automobile industry included time with Olds Motor Works, Ford Motor Company, and Regal Motor Car Company before he struck out on his own in November 1908 and started the Detroit-based Hupp Motor Car Company. His first car was the small, two-seat Model 20, but by 1923 the Hupmobile Series R was in its sixth year of production.
The Series R, introduced in 1917, featured a 182.5 cu-in four-cylinder inline engine that produced 16.5 horsepower and was coupled with a three-speed transmission. The 1923 Hupmobile was known for its stylish design and practical features. It had a 112-inch wheelbase and was available in various body styles, including the coupe, roadster, and sedan. The car's affordability and durability made it popular among middle-class Americans, contributing to Hupmobile's success during the early 1920s.
Despite its initial popularity, the Hupp Motor Car Company faced increasing competition from larger manufacturers like Ford and General Motors. By the late 1920s, the company struggled to maintain its market share. However, the 1923 Hupmobile Two-Door Coupe remains a symbol of the innovative spirit and craftsmanship that defined the early automotive industry.
