Description

Chevrolet designer Clare MacKichan recalled about creating the Chevy II: “There was no time for experimentation or doodling around with new ideas from either the engineers or from us in design; And it had to be a basic-type car.” Chevy’s highly ambitious and very technically advanced (for the time) rear engine, air-cooled Corvair was a flop in the showroom, and they needed to move quickly to compete with Ford’s wildly popular Falcon. The 1962 Chevy II, and fancier Nova, was exactly what Chevrolet needed: Compact, inexpensive, practical, yet with plenty of style.

This 1962 Nova convertible is proof that practical doesn’t need to be boring. The consignor purchased the Nova in 1997, then slowly restored it to like-new condition, going so far as to reupholster the seats with the difficult to find original interior vinyl pattern and color. Under the hood a Chevy 350 small block bored to 400 cu-in replaces the original six-cylinder, but with period-looking features. Power disc brakes and a sway bar were added up front, and QA1 adjustable shocks all around. This Nova convertible looks like it did in 1962: practical, yet with plenty of style — and power.
