Description
In 1962, chicken farmer, Army Air Corps pilot, 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, car constructor, and entrepreneur Carroll Shelby embarked on a venture that combined the aluminum body of the AC Ace with Ford's 260 cubic-inch V8 engine. This fusion of lightweight British engineering and American power took place at Los Angeles-based Shelby-American Inc. to become the legendary Shelby Cobra. Pursuing greater power and racing homologation, Shelby upgraded to Ford's 427 cubic-inch engine in 1965, giving birth to the Shelby 427 Cobra. Only 260 original road-going Shelby 427 Cobras were built over a two-year period, making them some of the most highly sought-after and frequently replicated cars of all time, including the high-quality replica being auctioned here.
Highlights
This Shelby Cobra 427 S/C is a high-quality replica built from a Classic Roadsters kit completed in 2017 by the COO of a renowned restoration shop in Denver, Colorado
Powered by a period-correct 302 cu-in Ford V8 mated to a five-speed manual transmission
Finished in striking Guardsman blue with twin white racing stripes over gray upholstery
Equipped with an unleaded fuel-filler restrictor, legal-height windshield, as well as fully street-legal turn signals, brake lights, horn, and windshield wipers
The engine was sent to the drag racing engine experts of Mountain View Performance in Rancho Cucamonga, California where it received new pushrods and a distributor as well as numerous Edelbrock performance modifications including red roller rockers, Elite II valve covers, Performer RPM intake manifolds and cylinder heads, and an air cleaner
Work completed in September 2021 by Sander’s Auto in San Dimas, California included reinstalling the engine, adding a flow tank to the radiator, sending the flywheel to be resurfaced, replacing the pressure plate, rerouting all wiring and vacuum lines, modifying the throttle linkage to fit new intake, repairing rear suspension, and reinstalling the headers
Accompanying dyno test sheets performed in 2021 at Mountain View Racing in Rancho Cucamonga, California demonstrate the significant increase in horsepower and torque gained with the engine upgrades
Please note that as a kit car, the vehicle was given a Colorado-assigned a VIN of 1DC0000814ZZ and registered as a 2017 “ASVE,” or assembled vehicle
