Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
In 1940, with America’s entry into World War II looming, Ford introduced the Model 01A (De Luxe) and 022A (Standard), which featured stylish good looks by influential chief designer Eugene T. Gregorie. Among the new Fords’ notable innovations was the use of sealed beam headlights, which significantly improved nighttime driving visibility, and a column-mounted gear shift that provided leg room up front for an additional passenger.
Other features included dark mahogany interior trim and “floating edge seat cushions,” which Ford said made for a more comfortable ride, as well as Ford’s venerable 221 cu-in flathead V8 engine.
“The design of the De Luxe Ford V8 for 1940 establishes this car more firmly than ever as the style leader in its price class,” the dealership brochure proclaimed. “It is big, substantial, and powerful in appearance...When you settle down and get the smooth, substantial feel of a De Luxe Ford V8, you'll realize that here is a really big car—big in everything but price!” Ford wasn’t kidding about the price, either. The 1940 Ford De Luxe Tudor Sedan went for $740 (less than $17K today).
