“There’s a reason every kid longs to drive it,” said the 2007 Mustang brochure. After helping the Blue Oval establish its “Total Performance” program in the 1960s, Shelby reconnected with Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) for the new fifth-generation Mustang in 2005. Introduced for 2007, the supercharged Shelby GT500 was built on the same Flat Rock, Michigan, assembly line as lessor ’Stangs. Power was from Ford’s 5.4-liter DOHC V8 enhanced with aluminum cylinder heads from the Ford GT supercar, a cast-iron block, and a Roots-type supercharger. The result was rated at an impressive 500 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque.
The GT500’s design paid homage to its ’60s predecessors with aggressive styling cues, including a prominent front grille, Le Mans racing stripes, and the iconic Cobra emblem. The GT500 was further enhanced by a race-tuned suspension and four-piston Brembo front brakes. Rounding out the package were unique sport bucket seats with leather seating surfaces, six-gauge instrument cluster, and the Shaker 500 Audio System with six-disc CD changer and six speakers. The Shelby GT500 was available in either Fastback or Convertible configuration.
As MotorWeek reported, “It is both impressively capable and amazingly refined. And one that has earned the right to be a Shelby.”
