Description

Hagerty Marketplace is honored to offer a selection of vehicles from the SugarCreek Collection. This private collection in southeastern Ohio is supported by its own in-house restoration and maintenance shop, with a full-time staff of craftsmen. The garage is a true spectrum of car enthusiast dreams, ranging from unfinished restorations to the most recent SEMA-exhibited 1,000 horsepower 1962 Dodge Power Wagon. Sixteen select cars from the collection are being offered in time for the holidays. Whether awaiting restoration, preserved showroom stock, restored to like-new, or tastefully modified, these cars and trucks are truly SugarCreek quality.

After the runaway success of Ford’s Mustang, the other manufacturers joined the “pony car” party. But the Mercury Cougar was unique, where wild met elegance via a sporting luxury car with handsome European-inspired styling. The rich look started with the hideaway headlights to those cool sequential rear turn signals in back. A lengthy options list allowed buyers to choose whether they wanted to create a luxurious coupe, a potent muscle car, or a little of both.

An assortment of V8s were available, from the 351 cu-in V8 to this cat, which is powered by the fiery 428CJ. The Ram Air version of the 428CJ was known as the 428CJ-R, and it used a special air cleaner assembly that incorporated a trap door, which let outside cool air enter the carburetor whenever the gas pedal was floored. This 1969 Cougar XR-7 restored by the SugarCreek Collection is one of just 365 built with 428CJ Ram Air power; far rarer is the 428 CJ-R with factory Whisper-Aire air conditioning. Which is why Mercury reminded the competition that the Cougar XR-7 428CJ Ram Air was “Still the Top Cat!”
