1990 Ford Thunderbird Super Coupe Engine Start
Description
In 1989, Ford introduced the tenth-generation Thunderbird alongside the Mercury Cougar. Unlike its GM counterparts which embraced front-wheel drive chassis, Ford designers opted to maintain a rear-wheel drive design akin to pricier German grand touring coupes – particularly drawing inspiration from the BMW 635 CSi. A significantly longer wheelbase (measuring 113 inches) along with fully independent suspension resulted in much-improved handling and ride comfort. Inside, the Thunderbird received comfortable seats from the Taurus SHO, richly upholstered in special cloth. For 1990, a special 35th Anniversary Edition Thunderbird, known as the Super Coupe, was launched featuring automatic ride control, speed-sensitive power steering, and a more luxurious interior.
