Description
Beginning in 1984, SCCA racing driver and American entrepreneur Steve Saleen made his name as a tuner of Ford Mustangs for the street and the track. He and his shop Saleen Automotive Inc. took his Mustang racing knowledge and translated it to chassis and engine upgrades that propelled his ponies to the top step of the podium, even taking a few race-prepared SN-95 (fourth-generation, 1994–2004) Mustangs to run the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1997. At the same time, Saleen’s road-going treatment of the SN-95 arrived in the form of the SVT Cobra-based S-281, evolving in 1999 to become the supercharged S-281SC. Using the Mustang’s 4.6-liter V8 as a base and equipping a Roots-type Saleen supercharger, the S-281SC was a 350-horsepower brute with bulging bodywork and over-the-top spoilers and scoops.
