Description
When General Motors first launched the Camaro in 1966 it marked the birth of the incredible Camaro vs. Mustang pony car rivalry we know and love today. When prompted by reporters on what the name Camaro actually meant, Chevrolet product managers would report “a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs”, a less than subtle way of letting Ford their newest competitor had been born. After just two short years of production for the first generation Camaro, Chevrolet would lift the cover in February of 1970 for the second generation that was a much more focused driver's car that would evolve into successful IROC racing cars. Available exclusively in coupe body configuration, Road & Track included the 1971 Camaro as one of the top ten best cars in the world in August 1971. While the exterior design would remain similar from 1970, interior upgrades including new high-back Strato bucket seats with built-in headrests would be introduced for 1971.
