1965 Triumph TR4 Start Up
Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
The Triumph TR4, produced from 1961 to 1965, succeeded the TR3A with a chassis and drivetrain closely related to its predecessor but featuring a new body designed by Giovanni Michelotti. After creating the TR3 Speciale concept, Triumph commissioned Michelotti in 1957 to develop a more serious proposal, leading to the prototype “Zest” built on a TR3A chassis. Concurrently, Triumph's Competitions department worked on a high-performance engine, the 20X, for a chassis that widened the track and extended the wheelbase. Michelotti was later tasked with creating a body for this engine, resulting in the “Zoom” prototypes. Although the Zoom body was used for racing at Le Mans, management ultimately decided that neither Zest nor Zoom fully met market needs. The final design for the TR4 combined elements from both prototypes, featuring a wider track and an optional hardtop.
The TR4 was indeed a standout among British roadsters of its time, with its combination of style, performance, and accessibility. It captured the hearts of many enthusiasts, especially in the U.S., where its nimble handling and spirited performance made it a favorite both on the road and the racetrack. Today, enthusiasts appreciate the TR4 not just for its charm, but also for the engaging driving experience it offers.
