It’s been a long wait, but 2020 Toyota Supra orders are now open

It’s been a long wait for Toyota enthusiasts, more than 20 years since they could buy a new Supra. However, that wait is over, as U.S. dealers have started taking orders for the fifth-generation 2020 Toyota GR Supra. If you want to get a regular Supra, though, you’ll actually have to wait until Toyota sells the first 1500 Supras, configured as special Launch Edition models.

Based on the 3.0 Premium Grade trim package, the Launch Editions will be serially numbered and come with distinctive features exclusive to the premiere version. They will come in red, black, or white, with contrasting red side mirror housings and 19-inch aluminum wheels in a matte black finish. The launch models come with special leather and carbon-fiber interiors, red in the white and black cars, while the red car’s interior is finished in black. The passenger side of the dash features a carbon-fiber badge with the car’s production number in the run of 1500 and a facsimile of Toyota boss Akio Toyoda’s autograph. It was Toyoda who personally introduced the new Supra in January at the Detroit auto show.

After those Launch Editions are sold ($56,180 including delivery), Toyota dealers will start taking orders on the base 3.0 and 3.0 Premium versions of the Supra. All three trim levels come with a BMW-built turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder gasoline engine that puts out 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque and a paddle-shifted eight-speed automatic transmission, capable of 4.1-second 0–60 runs. The base 3.0 model starts at $50,920, and the 3.0 Premium will cost $54,920 before options, making the relatively exclusive, but not that much more expensive Launch Edition a bit of a bargain.

The base car gets Alcantara upholstery, a 6.5-inch display, and Bluetooth and iPod compatibility, with navigation and a premium JBL audio system available as options. The Premium models get navigation and a 12-speaker JBL sound system as standard equipment, operated from an 8.8-inch wide-format touch screen, along with wireless Apple CarPlay, Supra Connect telematic services, wireless phone charging, colorized head-up display, and heated seats. In addition to the colors offered on the Launch Edition, which can also be ordered on the other trim levels, the regular production Supras can be ordered in yellow, blue, silver, gray, and matte gray.

All 2020 GR Supras will come with keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rear camera, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming mirror, power folding side mirrors, built-in garage door transmitter, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Driver assists include full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, and parking sensors as standard equipment. Standard safety features include a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with steering assist, and auto-dimming high beams.
