Petersen Museum reunites movie cars with their films

In connection with its Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy exhibit, this summer the Petersen Automotive Museum is bringing out some of those vehicles to special showings of the movies they star in at Los Angeles’ Level 8 Drive-In, a “luxury drive-in movie experience,” at The Grove shopping mall.

The events take place on the last Wednesday of every month through September. The first screening, with the musical Grease and its Greased Lightning hot rod, took place this week. Other scheduled showings are The Great Gatsby on July 31st, accompanied by a 1932 Duesenberg Model J, the original Back To The Future with its DeLorean time machine on August 28th, and Iron Man on September 25th, featuring Tony Stark’s ’32 Ford roadster hot rod.

The Level 8 Drive-In is so named because the temporary outdoor theater is set up on the roof of The Grove’s parking structure. In addition to the movie cars, attendees will also have the chance to check out ultra-luxury and uber-performance cars on display from O’Gara Coach, a Los Angeles area exotic car dealership. For those not wanting to drive in to the drive-in, Uber is participating in the event as well.

While the screenings, sponsored by Citi, are open to the public and free to attend, space is limited and reservations are recommended. You can visit The Grove website for more details.

Hollywood Dream Machines, with movie and TV cars and related studio art, props, and costumes runs through March 15th, 2020 at the Petersen.
