These epic movie cars aren’t your average Walmart grocery-getters
Although we’re barely two weeks into 2019, there’s already a solid contender for best commercial of the year. Walmart’s latest ad for their new curbside grocery pickup service essentially takes your entire childhood-movie Hot Wheels collection and brings that big ol’ toybox to life.
The 90-second spot jams out to Gary Numan’s Cars and features a number of icons from the big screen, including a grocery-bag-grappling Batmobile, Ghostbusters’ Ecto-1, Knight Rider’s K.I.T.T., the Yellow-VW-Beetle Bumblebee from the new Transformers movie, and, of course, Back to the Future’s DeLorean time machine. We were also pleased to see a few supporting-role rides sneak their way into the action, like the early-1990s Ford Explorer from Jurassic Park, Dumb and Dumber’s furry “Mutt Cutts” van, and Vacation’s four-eyed “Family Truckster.”
Cartoons needn’t feel left out either, as Walmart made sure to enlist Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine, Flintstone’s tip-over-prone footmobile, Cinderella’s magical pumpkin chariot, and Cars fastest racer, Lightning McQueen. The best Easter egg, however, is the super-store’s subtle nod to its own heritage in the last few seconds. Before the credits roll, a red-and-white 1979 Ford F-150 pulls into the lot, the exact truck owned and driven daily by Walmart founder Sam Walton from 1979 until his passing in 1992.
