The face of the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Ford continues the slow drip of teaser information with the upcoming GT500. As with the recently-released Bronco teaser image, we don’t get much here, but we do get an idea of what the GT500 front end styling will look like.

The GT500 news officially started in January when Ford released a short video with two scant facts: 700-plus horsepower and a 2019 arrival. With current Mustang model years perpetually a year ahead, we’re betting that makes the new GT500 a 2020 model. We’re also speculating that Ford will use supercharger combined with a new version of the 5.2-liter V-8 engine from the GT350 to get to that 700-plus horsepower figure. And now that the current-gen Mustang has a more sophisticated, independent rear suspension in place of the long-held live rear axle, we expect the GT500 will finally have the handling chops to match up with its prodigious power.

As for the new image, that’s a heck of a grille. The Mustang Shelby GT500, in modern times, has always needed plenty of air for both the engine and for cooling. The 2013 model went without a grille, its airflow needs were so great. In addition to the large opening on the model (which should have a bumper crossmember in there), we can see the strong outline, with bodywork visually separated from the headlights. And, of course, there’s a big ol’ snake logo front and center, which guarantees you’ll recognize this Mustang as it flies past you.
